Tyrian 2000 sprites5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The only bad thing about the game is that it is hardcoded to run at something like 25fps. It also has an awesome secret Scorched Earth clone, with nukes, bouncing lasers, repulsing magnets and helicopters. Plus, it has a bunch of secret codes for different ships in Arcade mode, such as a Carrot that shoots different kinds of food, like hot dogs and oranges (blasphemy!), a Ninja ship that shoots shuriken, etc. There are also branching/alternate paths in level progression and many secret levels. Levels were great and pretty varied, from fighting blimps on lush planets to avoiding mines in asteroid fields to shooting free-floating parts of a giant face on a planet that is disintegrating. The story was this great tongue-in-cheek neo-noir tale with you playing Trent Hawkins in all that 90's awesomeness. You could also pick up data cubes that had all sorts of information about the story or locations. The balancing of the 2P mode is interesting, because it doesn't change the number of enemies or anything, iirc, but basically gives each player literally half the weaponry you have in SP, one has the front guns, the other has the rear guns and external pods. Joining together is a little flawed, though, because then one player controls the ship and the other just fires some weapons. There is a two-player mode where one uses the keyboard and the other the mouse, and you can link together to form one bigger ship. Variety of different types of front and rear weapons, plus shield, hull and generator to upgrade in Full Game, where you need to strike a balance between the power of your weapons/shield and your generator or else you'd run out of power to fire quickly. It had an Arcade mode where you pick up weapons and powerups and a 'Full Game' mode where you pick up money and upgrade your ship by buying new parts. Played so much of this game in the 90's even though I only had the shareware version. ![]()
